Smartphone-giant Apple has reportedly begun selling certified refurbished iPhone XR models in limited capacities and color variants, for the first time in the U.S.
Refurbished iPhone XR models carry a price tag with an approximately 16% discount, as compared to the ongoing costs of brand-new units, slashing off between $100–120 from the usual price.
Alongside the 64GB and 128GB variants matching the present brand-new iPhone XR models, refurbished units are also available with 256GB storage, but are currently available only in Black color. When launched back in 2018, the iPhone XR was offered in all three capacities, but when it moved down the lineup as a lower-priced option in September 2019, the 256GB models were discontinued.
64GB Variant: $499
Down from the present $599 price and $749 initial launch price
128GB Variant: $539
Down from the present $649 price and $799 initial launch price
256GB Variant: $629
Down from former $749 clearance price and $899 launch price
All the present refurbished iPhone XR models carry unlocked carriers and are not fitted with a SIM card, so they can be activated with any carrier the customer opts for.
Apple says these models are thoroughly inspected, tested, cleaned, and re-packaged inside a new, white box along with all accessories and manuals. A new battery is installed, and the outer shell is replaced, making it very difficult to distinguish a refurbished model from a brand new one.
These refurbished iPhone models are offered with Apple’s standard 1-year warranty, applicable from the date the phone is delivered, which can be extended with AppleCare+ for $149 or for $7.99 per month for an iPhone XR. Upgraded AppleCare+ with theft & loss coverage is offered to customers for $249, or for $12.99 per month.
